The Andromeda galaxy is 2.5 million light years away, so it takes the light from Andromeda 2.5 million years to reach us. That means, when we look at Andromeda we’re seeing what it looked like 2.5 million years ago. In 2.5 million years, observers on Earth would see how Andromeda looked today. So, say you teleported instantaneously from your house all the way to the Andromeda galaxy and you looked back at Earth with a giant telescope. You’d see the Earth as it was 2.5 million years ago: the formation of the modern ice sheets on Antarctica and Greenland and the evolution of Homo gautengenis, the first human ancestors to modern humans. In actuality, it would still be 2010 on Earth but the light from today won’t reach you for another 2.5 million years.
